Are you looking for extra Tuition in Mathematics for your child, or self?
There are numerous reasons for considering a Mathematics Tutor - Remedial Numeracy, Preparation for Selective School Placement Exams or Accelerated Learning Classes, Boosting Confidence and Improving Grades in general, HSC Success, Passing Bridging Courses at University. Whatever your need is, there are 2 key styles of teaching/learning Mathematics to consider and 2 key types of Math Tutor to consider.
Rote Learning - Reliance on Memorisation and Repetition, often with minimal or no deeper understanding. Math is reduced to formulae to be memorised and procedures to be learnt and drilled, often in the complete absence of any understanding of why?
Teaching/Learning for Understanding - Mathematics is not only a Science but the Root of all Sciences, Everything in Mathematics is based on logic and reason. Math is a body of knowledge continuously building on itself. New Math is always completely connected to current Math knowledge.
Mathematics has been in decline in Australia for many years and in my own humble opinion, the greatest reason for this has been the abandonment of Logic and Reason for Rote Learning approaches, tricks and hacks. Firstly, the subject increasingly ceases to be a Science and instead becomes some sort of a Dark Art for many students. As Math is a subject constantly building on itself, the further a student progresses without understanding, the harder it becomes to understand. Secondly, shallow learning of facts and processes is far less successfully encoded to long term memory than deep learning which is making strong connections with prior learning in building new knowledge. The impact of this is twofold. Students struggle to remember, and students have faulty memory, leading to buggy processes. For example, many students will add two fractions by adding the top and adding the bottom, a faulty recall of the process of multiplying two fractions.
Teaching/Learning for Understanding has several massive advantages. Not only does a deeper connection to the learning greatly enhance memory encoding, but also it reduces the need for the student to do the masses of practice that programs like Kumon rely on. Students can literally work smarter rather than harder. It’s also noticeable at university level that the top Mathematics Students are the Deep Learners and not the Rote learners.
The next key decision is the type of Tutor you employ - A doer of Mathematics or a Teacher of Mathematics? Whenever somebody posts to a community Social Media page looking for a Math Tutor, there will be several responses from Uni Students, often throwing up their impressive ATAR’s. Being able to DO Math and being able to TEACH Math are worlds apart, especially when so many of those ATAR Successful Doers have their own ability rooted in Rote Approaches suited to their own learning characteristics.
Professional Teachers are not only University Graduates in their field but also trained in Educational Psychology and Learning Theories in Education, as well as having greater levels of experience teaching diverse types of students with diverse learning strengths, weaknesses, styles and characteristics.

Remedial Numeracy
$90 / 1 Hour Lesson
If you ask a child who the smartest student’s in their year are, they will always reel off the top student’s in Mathematics!
Of course this isn’t necessarily correct, but it does give us insight into how big a role Math can play in children’s self-esteem as students. Mathematics is about so much more than basic numeracy. Weakness with numeracy, most often leads to students having low confidence and learning outcomes in the subject throughout the full High School Curriculum. Students with low self-efficacy in Mathematics often shut themselves down from attempting to connect with and understand concepts, even when numeracy skills are not required.
Many students struggle with numeracy not because they are incapable, but because they have never properly learnt calculation strategies. One of the big requirements in addressing this is also distributed practice. For this reason, I always work with both a parent and child with remedial numeracy. This way, a supportive parent can be learning the same strategies being taught for the session. This enables the parent to spend 15-20 minutes a day, practicing using these strategies with their child. This doesn’t even need to be a block, in fact, a few minutes a few times a day can be even more effective - over breakfast, while driving them to school etc.
Selective School Entrance Exam Prep
Private School Accelerated Program Prep
$90 / 1 Hour Lesson
Are you planning on having your child sit for entrance exams for Selective School Placement at Merewether High School?
Or hoping for your child to be selected in accelerated or gifted learning programs in their Private School setting?
Tuition in mathematical problem solving and introductory level algebraic approaches, with Selective School Practice Papers, can maximise their likelihood of success.
From firsthand experience, Private School determination of which students should be selected for accelerated or gifted classes, can be unfairly influenced by outside tutoring over purely natural abilities,
Ensuring your child’s transition from Math as basic numeracy to Math as a Science, is grounded in approaches based on logic and reason, can also ensure they have a strong foundation for their Senior Studies.
HSC and University Bridging Course Support
$120 / 90 Minute Lesson
Support for Students across all HSC Courses up to and including Extension 1.
1 Hour Sessions are available, however from experience, the time flies and the extra half hour proves to be invaluable with respect to students feeling their session was well wrapped up rather than rushed.
Sessions can be planned for differing student approaches - Working at same pace as school class, learning ahead of school class or using Tutoring Sessions primarily to focus on topics they have found more difficult/confusing.
Use of sessions to go over less successful attempts at practice paper questions, can also be an invaluable tool in increasing student confidence and final HSC Scores.
If you’re a student that elected to undertake lower levels of Math in the HSC but need to do Bridging Courses in Higher Math in the first year of your chosen University Studies, you’re likely finding it challenging. It’s definitely easier covering the material over a longer period of time and in a High School Class setting. University Bridging courses are far more compressed with less scaffolding. One on One Tutoring focusing on building required understanding, will certainly help to ease the pressure.
Holiday Small Group Clinics
Holidays are a great time to catch up or get ahead. I run small group (6 Student) Holiday Clinics in Cardiff covering HSC areas such as Introductory Calculus.
These Clinics are 2 Hour Sessions at $80 a Session.
Students are welcome to form their own group and request Clinic Topics. and Times.
